Sniff & Gos are unofficial scent work events that are designed to give teams some competition practice without the pressure of a full event. Teams will be given a specific arrival time and will complete all their searches, back to back, soon after their arrival. In an official trial, teams all arrive at the start of the event and must wait for all teams to complete each search (or set of searches) before starting the next search meaning all teams start and end at the same time. In a Sniff & Go, each team arrives, searches, and gets their results, during their designated 10-15 min time slot. This eliminates the need to stay in the car for long wait times while still providing the challenge of a new search area and unknown hides.
What is a Sniff & Go?
There is no pre-requisite for any of the levels but hides and rules will be set in a fashion similar to what you would expect at an National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) trial for NW1, 2 or 3. At Level 1, there will be 1 hide in each of the 4 search areas: interior, exterior, containers, and vehicles. At level two, there will be between 1 and 3 hides in each of the areas and we will tell you how many hides to find prior to the start of your search. At level 3, there will be an unknown number of hides between 0 and 3 for each space. There will be four search areas (1 interior, 1 exterior, 1 vehicle, and 1 container).
Which level should I choose?
Once we have closed our entries on April 25th, we will assign times for each team to arrive. The Level 1 teams will be first, then Level 2 and then Level 3. If you are registering for a Level 1 slot, plan on being available in the morning. Level 2 teams should plan for late morning/early afternoon. Level 3 teams will likely have a time slot in the afternoon. The exact times will be given once registration closes.
What time will I need to arrive?
While we are not awarding prizes for the fastest times or number of hides found, we will record your own personal times and hides found on your score sheet which you will receive at the end of your searches. Each team will receive a participation momento and a video of your searches. My goal is to help teams prepare for future competitions and/or experience a taste of what competition might feel like without the full stress and pressure of a real trial. The videos can be utilized later to help create training plans and celebrate successes.
Are there prizes?
Can your dog happily search for Birch, Anise, and Clove in a new environment while a stranger watches? If the answer is yes, this event is probably appropriate for you. If your dog is scared of strangers in close proximity or if your dog is not comfortable enough in new environments to search for the target odors, then it might not be appropriate to put your dog in this situation quite yet. If you are not sure, please send me a message and we can chat about it! sara@trailsandtailsdogschool.com
Is this an appropriate event for me and my dog?
